On the foundation of this interesting finding,Dr L Boominathan PhD, Director-cum-chief Scientist of GBMD,reports that: Natural product-based therapy forp53-deficient tumors: Berberinesuppresses, increases the expression of DNp63, IAPP(Amylin), respectively, and induces regression of p53-mutated human tumors via down regulation of its target gene.

Significance:Cancersuppressorp53 is mutated in more than 50% of different human cancers, while its pathway is altered in about 80% of different human tumors.This study suggests a therapeutic strategy as tohow p53-deficient or mutant p53 expressing human cancers can be cured by suppressing its “oncogenic version of homologous protein p63” such as DNp63.Berberine, by suppressing the expression of its target gene, it may decrease the expression of DNp63 and increase the expression of IAPP. Thus,pharmacological formulationsencompassing“Berberine or itsanalogues” can be used to inhibit the progression of p53-deficient human tumors.
